TAMPA, Fla (June 3, 2005) — The Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr. Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute announces the appointment of CEO Dr. Huntington Potter to serve on the 10-member Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative’s advisory committee. Dr. Potter received the appointment from Florida Governor Jeb Bush, and will serve on the committee through February 2009.

"I am honored to receive this appointment from Governor Bush," said Dr. Potter. "This new position will enable me to continue working with my colleagues throughout the state of Florida while advising the Department of Elderly Affairs and the Governor on Alzheimer’s disease."

The Alzheimer Disease Initiative includes four components: supportive services; memory disorder clinics; model day care programs that test new care alternatives; and a special website, the "Nursing Home" Index, designed for caregivers to ethnic elders with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.

The advisory committee serves to advise the Department of Elderly Affairs in the performance of its duties under the Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative.

The Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr. Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute was established in 2002 by the Florida legislature and is dedicated to research and finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists around the state are working in collaboration with the Byrd Institute, and research grants have been awarded to community groups working directly with persons living with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Byrd Institute broke ground on a state-of-the art research facility in the spring of 2005 that will be located on the grounds of the University of South Florida in Tampa. The building will house laboratories, a clinical suite, teaching classrooms, auditoriums, meeting spaces, and administrative offices. Projected completion date is scheduled for Fall 2006.

Established in 2002, the Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr. Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute is located on the grounds of the University of South Florida and is dedicated to the cure and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. The Byrd Institute is governed and operated by a Florida not-for-profit corporation that is organized solely for the purposes of the Institute.
