THE QUEEN’S WORKING WARDROBE: MEMORIES OF ROYAL OCCASIONS 1945 - 1972
13th May 2005 Back

LONDON- (May 13, 2005)- Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will visit Saskatchewan and Alberta, Tuesday, May 17, 2005 through Wednesday, May 25, 2005, as part of the celebration marking the centennial of these provinces’ entry into Confederation.

Last summer, Kensington Palace, once home of the late Princess Diana, opened an exhibition celebrating HM Queen Elizabeth II’s diverse style and fashion. The Queen’s Working Wardrobe: Memories of Royal Occasions 1945-1972 features twelve different outfits worn by Her Majesty, each chosen to reflect various aspects of her life and work. The exhibition, which followed the Hats and Handbags: Accessories from the Royal Wardrobe, has been extended from its scheduled end date of July 2005 to October 2005, due to a successful year.

One of the most distinctive outfits displayed is Her Majesty’s gray silk organdie evening dress with pink & white floral embroidery worn to a banquet at the Nova Scotian Hotel, Halifax on August 1, 1959 during a 45-day tour of Canada. The dress was designed by Hardy Amies and incorporates Mayflowers, the floral emblem of the Canadian State of Nova Scotia, into the embroidered design. This particular dress demonstrates the great care and attention to detail associated with preparing a wardrobe for a lengthy Royal Tour, often requiring several months of advance planning with special considerations taken for local weather conditions and for the particular requirements of specific engagements.

The Queen as patron of arts and science has attended hundreds of exhibitions and performances during her reign and it is on these occasions that some of her most glamorous couture gowns can be enjoyed.

The earliest and probably one of the most recognizable outfits displayed is Her Majesty’s Auxiliary Territorial Service uniform that she first wore in February 1945 when she joined ATS during World War II. Registered as cadet No. 230873 Second Subaltern Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, she was often photographed in this uniform driving army vehicles and fixing engines with spanner in hand as part of the war effort when she undertook duties at Camberley, Surrey.

The exhibition also features a "wall of memories – shared experiences" where personal memories from meetings with The Queen are displayed. Kensington Palace is collecting personal memories from anyone who met the Queen or has taken part or been spectators of Royal events and celebrations. The memory wall displays pictures, momentos and descriptions of what it was like to meet Her Majesty.

The Queen’s Working Wardrobe: Memories of Royal Occasions 1945-1972 is included in the price of regular admission to Kensington Palace. Tickets cost approximately $24.50 CAD for adults and $15.00 CAD for children 16 and under.
