Florida Alzheimer's Center & Research Institue Awards $1.8 Million in Statewide Grants

TAMPA, Fla.- (January 14, 2004) – The Florida Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute (FACRI) has begun the work of its mission to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. On Wednesday, January 14, 2004, the institute will award 16 doctors, representing research and educational institutions from around the state, with over $1.8 million in grants to further ongoing research on Alzheimer’s disease. The awards ceremony will take place on the site of the land that will house the future research institute, a state-of-the-art facility located on the campus of the University of South Florida. Grant recipients will be announced by FACRI CEO Huntington Potter and awarded by Speaker of the House Johnnie Byrd.

The grants were awarded to each recipient based on a criteria system developed by the National Institute of Health (NIH). The NIH system includes criteria in the following categories: multi-disciplinary, significance to treatment or diagnosis, translational, innovation, environment and approach. The grant recipients were chosen by a panel of researchers from around Florida, which scored each grant proposal using the NIH criteria system.

"Our first official act of honoring researchers is one step in a long journey to work towards the cure for Alzheimer’s disease, which currently affects 4 million people in this country, many of whom live full time or part time in our state," said Huntington Potter, CEO of the Florida Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute. "Since Florida has such a large aging population, it is almost our duty to not only build but also support the mission of this Institute", Potter concludes. The Florida Alzheimer's Center & Research Institute, once completed, will be the largest freestanding institute in the world devoted exclusively to the understanding and development of a cure for Alzheimer’s.

Florida Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute has an additional $400,000 which has not yet been assigned but will be awarded to fund community programs in the near future.

Established on July 1, 2002 by the State Board of Education, the Florida Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute will be located on the grounds of the University of South Florida and is dedicated to the cure and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. The Institute is governed and operated by a Florida not-for-profit corporation that is organized solely for the purposes of the Institute.
